APC’s response to the COVID-19 Pandemic:

APC member colleges, like their peers in the public and independent sectors of higher ed, are not immune to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and have done their best to maintain stability for their students, faculty and staff. More than half of APC member institutions are located in the metro NYC area and have experienced financial losses as well as trauma from the loss of faculty, students, or those close to the institutions.

The Association has been supporting our member colleges as they work through challenges like transitioning to remote learning, following federal and state guidelines to reopen their campuses, plans for screening and testing, contact tracing, securing PPE and distribution of the much needed CARES Act Funding to their students.

APC member institutions approached this crisis with a primary focus on the safety of students, faculty and staff.  Also as long standing members of their communities, they responded to local needs by donating PPE supplies; for instance - Bryant & Stratton College donated masks, gloves and ventilators to local hospitals.

Looking ahead to Fall – most APC member colleges will be taking a hybrid approach offering both on campus and remote learning options.  They are following all state and federal guidelines including screening, testing and social distancing protocols; limiting classroom and dorm capacities and where necessary prioritizing the return of classes that require a more hands on/in-person approach or students that struggle more in a remote learning environment.

APC member colleges were thankful to receive the CARES Act, HEERF Funds.  The federal government provided this funding to institutions across all sectors of higher education and APC members quickly disbursed this emergency aid to their students in need.

However, our students’ ongoing financial and mental health needs are significant.  Many students are struggling with homelessness, food insecurities, childcare needs or caring for other family members. While the emergency aid was appreciated it was not nearly enough to offset the financial hardship they are facing.

This means that state aid programs such as TAP and ETA are especially critical now and the Association is advocating for continued support of these programs.
